Ambassador Bridge owner nixing third crossing

Jun 16, 2003 12:00 PM

A coalition of U.S. and Canadian officials wants to build a third crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, but the owner of one bridge wants to put a halt to it.

The Canada-U.S.-Ontario-Michigan Border Transportation Partnership is eyeing three possibilities for a tunnel or bridge, each costing $400 to $600 million U.S.

The proposals under consideration are to twin the Ambassador Bridge with another span, build another bridge near Zug Island or convert a train tunnel in southwest Detroit into a twin train and truck tunnel.

However, Manuel J. (Marty) Moroun, owner of the Ambassador Bridge, said he does not want another bridge taking business away from his. Moroun said toll revenues generate $65 million per year for his Detroit International Bridge Co.

The Detroit-Windsor border currently handles $92 billion in trade per year.
