Biodiesel refinery to open in California By Sean Kilcarr Feb 27, 2003 12:00 PM Green Star Products (GSPI) said it will open the nation's largest biodiesel refinery in Bakersfield, CA. GSPI has a 35% ownership position in American Bio-Fuels, LLC (ABF), the company that is building the plant through a joint venture, it said. The refinery's production capacity is expected to be 35 million gallons per year at full production, more than double the entire U.S. biodiesel production capacity of 15 million gallons last year, GSPI said.
Biodiesel is a fuel that can be made from either organic products such as soybeans or even restaurant waste grease. To date, however, only B20 blends of biodiesel, made up of 20% biodiesel and 80% regular diesel fuel, can be used in standard truck engines without voiding most engine manufacturer's warranties.
