New Vision for the 21st Century Truck Partnership, a joint venture consisting of heavy-truck makers, the federal government, and automobile manufacturers, aims to develop truck engines that use gasoline-electric powertrains, minimize engine idling, and reduce aerodynamic drag as well as rolling tire resistance. The plan, unveiled by the Dept. of Energy, hopes to lower fuel consumption through incremental changes. Partners include Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Cummins, Mack, Volvo, Freightliner Honeywell, Eaton, BAE Systems, Nova BUS, Oshkosh and Paccar. The Caterpillar 3126E 7.2-liter midrange engine is now available on Autocar's WX series trucks. A lightweight option for vocational applications with GVWs under 60,000 lb., the engine offers 275 hp. with 800 ft.-lb. of torque. 306 ArvinMeritor will assume primary engineering, marketing and sales leadership in the Mexican market through a re-structuring of its joint venture with Quimmco, SACV, Monterrey, Mexico. Re-named Sistemas Automotrices de Mexico, the venture will be managed by both ArvinMeritor and Quimmco. The 50/50 partnership will manufacture and supply axles, air brakes and drivelines for medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks and trailers in Mexico.
