Delphi targets terrorism

Dec 1, 2002 12:00 PM

Delphi's new TruckSecure system, the next-generation of Delphi's Truck PC, is designed to provide a multi-layered security system, including the capability to identify and authorize drivers, track and guide vehicles and actually shut down a vehicle if it strays into a prohibited area. In other words, it is intended to help mitigate the threat of terrorists using a truck as a weapon, according to Dr. Bob Schumacher, business line executive, wireless and mobile multi-media for Delphi.

“The threat of terrorists using a truck transporting dangerous or hazardous material as a weapon is all too real,” said Schumacher. “We have responded by extending our existing Truck PC technology to include security capabilities such as tracking truck location, establishing GPS-based electronic fencing and route corridors and integration with emergency dispatch agencies.”

The radio-sized Truck PC unit still also provides integrated multiple hardware functions, including radio, trip computing and vehicle monitoring, as well as hosting third-party communications, user productivity and asset management software applications. It is built on an open architecture platform and powered by the Microsoft Windows CE operating system.
