Demand spikes for rental cars, trucks Sean Kilcarr Sep 17, 2001 12:00 PM With air travel still severely limited and rail and bus modes overloaded, travelers are turning to the rental car and truck industry to help them get where they need to go. Budget Rent a Car Corp., a subsidiary of Budget Group, reports that it has seen a huge spike in demand as many travelers choose rental cars as an alternative means of transportation. The company said it is also offering $19.99 per day rental contracts at its nearly 750 corporate-owned downtown and suburban locations across the nation. “Since Tuesday’s national tragedy, we’ve talked to tens of thousands of travelers and helped them make their way home by allowing our cars to go one-way just about anywhere in the United States,” said Mark Sotir, Budget Group’s president and COO. “We’re moving more of our fleet to our local market stores to lessen congestion and confusion at the airports and lowering rates.” Effective today, Budget said Ford Ranger Pickup trucks at participating downtown and suburban locations will cost $19.99 per day or $99.99 per week, with unlimited mileage. Intermediate and full-size cars are available for $29.99 per day and $139.99 per week, and sport utility vehicles are $39.99 per day and $179.99 per week, all with unlimited mileage. Budget will require only a one-hour advance reservation to receive these special rates. Travelers can also rent vehicles one-way for as low $49.99 per day with unlimited mileage and no drop fees.
Budget added that this offer is available on economy through full-size cars and Ford Rangers through September 21.
