Dietsche wins national championship Aug 25, 2003 12:00 PM Mark Dietsche, a FedEx Freight truck driver based in Salem, OR, is the 2003 National Truck Driving Grand Champion. Dietsche’s driving skills topped those of 360 other professional truck drivers from all across the U.S. in the American Trucking Assns. (ATA) sponsored National Truck Driving Championships, which were held over the weekend in Columbus, OH. The contestants were the state champions from all 50 states. In their respective classes, they compared their expertise in the driving skills they use daily. The tests included an alley dock, a rear line stop, a side park, a scales stop, a right turn, a front line stop, and straight line driving through a diminishing clearance. Dietsche, who also won the individual straight truck competition, succeeds Yellow Transportation driver James March of Pennsylvania as the Grand Champion.
The champions in the other eight classes were Thomas Snider of Ohio (Auto Transporter); Scott Stoudnour, Jevic Transportation, Pennsylvania (Five-Axle); Jim Bryan, FedEx Freight, California (Flatbed); Dale Duncan, Con-Way Western Express, California (Four-Axle); Mark Taylor, Wal-Mart, California (Five-Axle Sleeper); Weldon Runnels, Wal-Mart, Colorado (Tank Truck); Greg Nauertz, Roadway Express, Arizona (Three-Axle); and Andy Oder, FedEx Freight, Kentucky (Twins).
