Drive-by communications Apr 1, 2000 12:00 PM Mack and Detroit Diesel to introduce infrared data links Using infrared (IR) technology, a new short-range wireless data communications system will allow fleets to exchange vehicle operating information and instructions just by having a vehicle pass by an inexpensive reader mounted on a fuel island, service bay, or other stationary location. Initially developed by Vehicle Enhancement Systems, the IR data link will be introduced later this year by Mack Trucks as VESPLEX-IR and by Detroit Diesel Corp. as IRIS. The system transfers data using the SAE J1587 format, allowing it to wirelessly communicate data to and from a vehicle's J1708 data network. That means it can be used to download trip information and stored operating data, including diagnostic fault codes, as well as upload new vehicle speed sett ings and other operating parameters. The IR link can also be used as a wireless connection for diagnostic tools. Future applications include wireless authorization for remote fuel dispensing, as well as wireless data downloads for automated fuel-tax and DOT log reporting. The low-cost system uses common IR technology, according to spokespersons at both Mack and DDC. Simple IR transceivers are mounted on the side of the vehicle and at a fixed base location. Drivers passing within 40 ft. of the base transceiver receive a dash-mounted signal letting them know a connection has been made, and data begins flowing automatically. Mack says it plans to introduce VESPLEX-IR as a new-model option some time this summer. DDC will begin offering its IRIS version of the system at the same time as both a new-engine option and as an aftermarket retrofit. Dana Corp.'s Spicer Driveshaft Div. has expanded its line of Spicer Life Series driveshafts with the release of new medium-duty assemblies. Spicer Life models 55, 70, and 100 replace Spicer's 1480, 1550, 1610, and SPL90 series for Class 5-7 vehicles. Several new components contribute to the products' extended-service and reduced-maintenance features. A new universal joint design decreases premature U-joint wear, while improved U-joint seal designs lower maintenance requirements. The standard Spicer Life double-lip-sealing package requires lubrication every 6 mo. or 25,000 mi. (up from 3 mo./8,000 mi.); and a premium, optional upgrade U-joint, Spicer Life XS, features a triple-lip seal that is permanently lubricated. In addition, tighter balance specs reduce vibrations. Spicer will match the original vehicle manufacturer's warranty period up to two years with unlimited mileage. Circle 310 on reply card Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. has introduced a four-door, double-cab pickup truck, the first in a new line to be rolled out this year. Inc. introduced a plastic, 7-in. round complex reflector headlamp for the heavy-duty truck market. According to Brad Van Riper, vp-research & development at Truck-Lite, the lamp was developed with Visteon Automotive Systems. A direct replacement for standard glass sealed-beam lamps, the headlamp features a complex optical system that reduces driver fatigue by increasing the amount and distribution of light on the road. "With improved light output and a more focused beam pattern," Van Riper explained, "the lamp takes advantage of all light-collecting areas, thus vastly outperforming standard sealed-beam headlamps and reflectors." The headlamp assembly is modular, making it a universal retrofit to most vehicles with standard 7-in. round lamps. The headlamp uses a replaceable 9007 halogen bulb, which Van Riper pointed out is readily available at both automotive and heavy-duty parts outlets. These bulbs are rated for up to 1,200 hours of life on low beam and 250 hours on high. Halogen bulb replacement is said to be easier and quicker than complete headlamp replacement. "With the Truck-Lite headlamp, you simply remove the bulb from the rear of the lamp assembly and replace it. No special tools and no re-aiming is required," Van Riper said. Other features of the new lamp include a Gore-Tex vent that eliminates condensation due to weather changes; a polycarbonate lens with Diamond Shell hard coating that is up to 30 times more impact-resistant than glass; and a total weight of 12 oz., compared to 20 oz. for a glass lamp. Circle 314 on reply card Prestolite Electric is now offering a new technology that provides brushless-type endurance in a standard brush-type alternator package. Single Air Gap (S.A.G.) technology eliminates brush and slip rings, which are particularly susceptible to wear in heavy- or extended-use applications, replacing them with special current-conduction bearings. This has been achieved without increasing the product's weight or size. S.A.G. will initially be offered as an option on the 5-in. brush alternator and the new 5 3/4-in. Business Class brush-type system (see below) from Prestolite/Leece Neville by September of this year. The S.A.G. feature will then be offered on all new brush alternators. Also new from Prestolite is a Leece-Neville Business Class Alternator (BCA) for medium trucks (Class 4-7). The new unit has a 5 3/4-in. frame and is available in output ranges of 12V/90-115 amps and 24V/55-80 amps. The Business Class unit features a low-profile design that allows for a smaller size and maximum heat transfer. An enclosed brush design is said to provide extended life in harsh environments by preventing contamination of the brush and slip ring area. The BCA will be available in September 2000. Speaking at the spring TMC meeting in Nashville last month, Sam Hughes, national sales manager-OEM & Off-Highway for ExxonMobil Commercial Vehicle Lubricants, noted that Mobilith SHC 007 has been the oil company's primary semi-fluid lubricating grease since 1987. Hughes pointed out that the new TMC recommendations advise filling non-driven wheel-end cavities to the halfway point when using semi-fluid grease. He said that represents an increase in volume over previous guidelines. According to Hughes, the revised guidelines were necessary due to the recent development of various new hub systems that complicate the job of installing initial lubricant for factory technicians. He said following the TMC recommendations will help prevent improper filling due to inadvertent miscalculation. When used properly, said Hughes, Mobilith SHC 007 will eliminate relubrication leakage and extend service intervals beyond the 100,000-mile change points typical oil lubes require. A strategic partnership between VehiCare Corp. and Castrol Heavy Duty Lubricants will provide fleet customers with quality maintenance service and products. Keith Dobson, president and CEO of VehiCare, said that in the new partnership, VehiCare has agreed to exclusively use Castrol's products during its on-site maintenance services, inspections, and repairs. According to Steve Clancey, manager of product planning, the 26- to 32-in. nine-blade fans are designed to be lightweight, high-efficiency components for Class 7-8 diesel trucks. The fans incorporate glass-filled nylon blades, a honeycomb-design hub, and a steel center disk. This design, according to Clancey, weighs less (9 to 11.5 lb.), pulls more air, and requires less power to operate for greater fuel savings compared to competitive fans. Specific benefits of the high-efficiency design he listed include a reduction in fan-drive horsepower by as much as 15%; a saving of up to 4 hp. at normal cruising speed; less load on belt-drive systems; and reduced fan-generated noise. The fans are offered in two versions: high-flow (for "demanding applications") and standard. The high-flow unit is rated 15.72 hp. at 1,650 rpm while the standard model is rated 13.5 hp. at the same rpm. Scheduled for release during this year's first quarter, the new fans were jointly developed by Horton and Engineered Cooling Systems. The 86/RS1042 four-spring suspension kit is designed to fit both dry van and refrigerated -spring suspension model is designed for on- and off-highway use with straight deck, platform, drop deck, extendable deck, extendable container, curtain side van, and full-frame log trailers. Weight capacities range from 44,000 to 50,000 lb. for tandem axles. Both suspension packages offer greater rubber volume in torque arm and equalizer bushings for longer life and a better ride, with replaceable wear pads to eliminate cutting and welding complete hangers. Abrasion-resistant wear pads are available for both suspension models. Circle 304 on reply card The Gates Rubber Co. has introduced a new hose and clamp system to improve the cooling system performance of heavy-duty truck engines, while cutting maintenance expenses. Savings for a typical Class 8 truck are said to be in the neighborhood of $500 a year. This is attributed to reduced hose and clamp parts replacement, glycol replenishment, and labor for re-tightening clamps and topping off the radiator. The hose is a Gates Green Stripe model trailers with weight ratings of 44,000 lb. for tandem axles. The 88/RS1072 four, which the company said is less expensive and more durable than silicone hose. Rated to 750,000 mi., it's designed to reduce cold coolant leaks and EPA concerns for coolant seepage at maintenance facilities and parking areas by providing a better bond to stems and connectors. The Gates PowerGrip SB clamp is made of a heat-sensitive thermoplastic material that maintains a dynamic tension so it never needs re-tightening on any shape of hose or housing. According to the manufacturer, this eliminates cold leaks by maintaining a proper sealing force on the hose during the engine's operating cycle, even at sub-zero temperatures. Circle 311 on reply card Oval signal and back-up lamps, Signal-Stat 4070 Series from Federal-Mogul, now incorporate Wagner "Fat Cartridge" light bulbs and an enhanced bulb cradle system to provide significantly better shock/vibration damping. 353 Carrier Transicold's new RoadCare Certified Pre-Owned Equipment Coverage (CPEC) enables customers to buy factory-backed, pre-owned refrigeration units that have passed a 49-point inspection and rigorous performance tests. Circle 300 on reply card A new Under Beam Lift (UBL) from Hendrickson Trailer Suspension Systems is designed to maximize the advantages of liftable applications including dumps, tankers, straight- and drop-deck platforms, loggers, and specialty trailers. The lift mechanism, which weighs just 60 lb., can be combined with the company's conventional INTRAAX top-mount or INTRAAX ALL (low ride/liftable) systems for a lightweight integrated lift system. In addition, its compact profile allows for close axle spacing, leaving plenty of room for auxiliary equipment under the trailer. Circle 307 on reply card Also lighter and more compact is Hendrickson Truck Suspension Systems' new Ultra Rod torque rod. Finite element analysis has enabled Hendrickson to identify and strengthen areas of the torque rod that receive the greatest torque loading and strain, while reducing excess materials and weight in low-stress areas. The Ultra Rod eliminates assembly welds of torque rod ends to rod shafts, for example, using a single forging construction to improve structural integrity. In addition, Ultra Rods are equipped with bonded bushings to reduce friction-generated heat and stresses that contribute to rubber deterioration and higher maintenance costs. The bonded bushings use a high-tech covalent chemical bonding process which actually causes the rubber and metal molecules to interlink, creating a bond that is stronger than the rubber itself. Ultra Rods are available in fixed lengths and two-piece configurations. Circle 308 on reply card Joseph F. Loughrey, executive vp and president at Cummins Engine Co., announced an organizational restructuring of the Engine Business unit designed to increase accountability for financial performance of the division.
