Flying J continues WiFi rollout

Oct 20, 2003 12:00 PM

Truckstop operator Flying J Inc. said it has completed the first phase in the development of its new high-speed wireless fidelity (WiFi) network. The technology allows drivers access to a secure wireless communications network at more than 140 participating Flying J Travel Plaza locations across the United States and Canada.

Drivers with laptop computers and a WiFi card can send and receive data or connect to the Internet from the privacy of their truck or anywhere on site at those Flying J locations.

"Based on feedback from some of the thousands of subscribers who currently use the network, the system is providing integrated financial and communications solutions to the trucking industry and improving business processes," said JJ Singh, Flying J’s vice president, financial and communications services.

Flying J has been installing its 802.11.b system and technology over the past few months and has now completed approximately 50% of its WiFi network. Expansion plans call for WiFi locations to be installed at about 300 Flying J truckstops.

In addition, Flying J has plans in place for WiFi installations at select fleet carrier terminals across the country.
