Qualcomm starts consortium for untethered trailer tracking

Aug 20, 2003 12:00 PM

Qualcomm Inc. today announced it has created a consortium to further the development of its untethered trailer asset management system for the transportation and logistics industry, and that truckload carrier Schneider National Inc. has joined the consortium as its founding member.

Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions president Chris Wolfe said that the group will allow carriers using its trailer tracking technology to provide insight and guidance to help lead product direction, and ensure that development phases meet the needs of the industry.

Schneider National yesterday announced that it has chosen Qualcomm's untethered TrailerTRACS asset management system for its nationwide trailer fleet.

Utilizing the technology, Schneider National will be able to monitor status, location, and know if a trailer is hooked to or unhooked from a tractor or a rail car.

"The tracking data allows Schneider National to achieve optimal equipment positioning and utilization so that customers' requests for capacity can be filled faster than ever before," said Scott Arves, president, transportation sector, Schneider National.

In addition, using the new system, Schneider National said it will experience productivity and efficiency gains in trailer asset management and utilization. These gains will increase driver productivity and job satisfaction, enhance customer service and increase trailer security, the carrier said.
