Hybrid APU better than ever

Oct 17, 2006 3:41 PM

Carrier Transicold has improved its ComfortPro auxiliary power unit (APU) has with a 1,000-hr. service interval, industry standard R-134a refrigerant, and a 60-amp alternator.

The ComfortPro is an anti-idling solution that provides air conditioning, heating and household electrical current for a truck sleeper cab, battery charging and truck engine warming. It offers an all-electric architecture using the company’s Deltek hybrid diesel-electric technology.

The oil service interval has been doubled thanks to a larger oil reservoir and a new oil filter. In addition, the new alternator provides 50% more power than the original.

“The longer interval helps ensure that a truck won’t have to perform a maintenance stop exclusively for an APU oil change,” said Eduardo Andrade, business manager of special products. “By changing to R-134a, we brought the ComfortPro’s refrigerant in synch with automotive air conditioning systems, making service simpler for technicians due to standardizing parts and procedures.”
