Charity convoy planned for September Aug 4, 2005 11:12 AM Truckers can sign up for a September 24 truck convoy being organized by the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) to travel around Harrisburg, PA’s capital beltway as part of the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics. The convoy will begin at 10 a.m. September 24 with a police escort around the 27-mile-long I-81, I-83, and Route 581 beltway. Participating trucks will return to their staging area at the Pennsylvania Farm Show parking lot on Cameron Street in Harrisburg for entertainment, exhibits and other activities, FOP said. Joining the convoy costs $100 and truckers can bid on being the lead truck. Qualifying trucks include semis, truck/trailer combinations, large trucks, low boys, dump trucks, flat beds, buses, and large tow trucks. “The World’s Largest Truck Convoy is going to help over 26,000 athletes participate free of charge in Special Olympics Pennsylvania,” said Janine Cesare, president of the Special Olympics. “We are indebted to the trucking industry and the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Torch Run for their service.” Information is available by contacting Jim Harrity, director of the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Torch Run at 610-633-2685, by calling Special Olympics at 1-800-700-8585, or by emailing truckconvoy@specialolympics.org. |
