Qualcomm readies automated HOS system by David Cullen, executive editor Apr 27, 2005 3:23 PM PITTSBURGH, PA. At the National Private Truck Council annual meeting here this week, Qualcomm announced that its Hours of Service (HOS) application will be available this summer. The automated system is designed for with Qualcomm’s OmniTRACS solution and makes use of the electronic on-board recorder (EOBR) embedded in OmniTRACS. According to Norman Ellis, vp & gm, transportation & logistics wireless business, the HOS system complies with Section 395.15 of the DOT regulations governing the use of EOBRs to document compliance with DOT’s HOS rules. Information from the HOS system can be delivered to a fleet dispatch system via a web interface or it can be viewed online with a web browser. Ellis pointed out the automated record-keeping system offers numerous avenues to cost savings, including eliminating the manual creation and processing of paper logs; mitigating driver violations and fines associated with non-compliance; and improving dispatching decisions. He also noted that since the HOS application runs on the OmniTRACS platform, the up-front investment and driver training needed to deploy it are minimized.
Other features of the new application include: “Our HOS application provides electronic log keeping whether for best-practices use or to meet a future mandate [for electronic log-keeping]” Ellis told FleetOwner. “And it works on the OmniTRACS system with a charge of $5 to $10 per month per tractor,” he added.
