U.S. Xpress installs ALK navigation system

Oct 27, 2006 2:37 PM

U.S. Xpress Inc. will deploy ALK Technologies’ CoPilot Truck GPS navigation system across its entire fleet of more than 5,000 power units. ALK said this will make U.S. Xpress the largest carrier to provide its drivers with spoken, truck specific, turn-by-turn directions.

CoPilot Truck combines ALK’s PC*Miler 20 routing and mapping real-time GPC navigation to provide navigation down to almost any street address in the U.S. and Canada, the company said. The system guides drivers around roads, bridges and tunnels with truck restrictions. It automatically adapts routes based on factors such as traffic, construction or accidents.

Jeff Seibenhener, vp-information technology for U.S. Xpress, said the carrier CoPilot Truck to improve both operational efficiencies and driver retention.

“A big part of the decision to go with CoPilot was to help retain and attract drivers,” said Seibenhener. “We interviewed drivers, ex-drivers and driver liaisons, and found that driving directions were among the top three issues they had.”
