Briefs: November 2003 Nov 1, 2003 12:00 PM The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will issue exemptions to certain insulin-using diabetic truck drivers from the diabetes mellitus prohibitions contained in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. FMCSA said exemptions will be granted to applicants who meet the specific conditions and comply with all the requirements of the exemption, and for no longer than two years. Those drivers may apply to FMCSA for a renewal under procedures in effect at that time. Firestone is offering a new 29/32-in. deep drive-axle radial aimed at line-haulers. The maker says the FD690 PLUS has one of the deepest treads of any drive radial, along with a continuous shoulder design engineered to cut down irregular wear. The tire’s tread boasts an aggressive block/lug design with numerous angled edges to cut through water and road films. Center lugs are linked by tie bars to add stability and fight heel and toe wear. The continuous shoulder design helps prevent the start and spread of irregular wear without sacrificing wet traction, said Firestone. The tire, suitable for single and twin-screw applications, comes in both standard and low-profile sizes for 22.5- and 24.5-in. wheels. www.trucktires.com The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has proposed standards for mandatory training requirements for entry-level commercial drivers who are required to hold or obtain a CDL FMCSA said that it is not proposing to require entry-level drivers to receive training in areas that are already covered in the CDL test. Instead, the required training would address driver qualifications (medical and drug and alcohol testing), driver hours of service, and whistle-blower protection.
